I really think you better learn a LOT more about
carbs before you go doing anything!! The pilot
jet is only for idle speeds. Raising the needle
is for midrange. Main jet is Full Throttle, but
will affect all ranges. Changing pilot jet will
only affect idle. I would only change it if
you have to turn the mixture screw out more then
4 turns to get it to idle right. Otherwise, the
jets fine. Tune the Main jet by giving bike
full throttle. Go to bigger jets until you reach
the highest top speed. And you must check plug.
It should be a nice tan color around the electrode.
Any black stuff means you're too rich. If you have
good pull from idle to midrange, your needle position
is fine. If it is real boggy, lower the needle by
using a bigger spacer. If it doesn't pull hard enough
remove spacer or use smaller spacer. But above all
else get a book on carbs so you no what you're doing
and how it will affect you're bike. Yes I run a
4 inch long 3 inch O.D. foam filter. It's tight
but it fits. Using an intake pipe, you will gain
top end at the cost of torque. My bike hit much
harder with the foam versus the cloth K+N as evidenced
by running richer with the K+N filter. To get started,
my advice is get rid of airbox. You have a nice
pipe (Raask right?) so get a UNI foam filter. Trust
me, it may not look as cool, but it runs better.
Clamp it right to the carb!! Run a main jet 10
over stock. Turn out mixture screw 2-3 turns. Remove
white spacer or if you have different carb then 2001
model, raise needle. See how you like it there.
When you gas it hard and let off, the RPM's should
drop quickly. There shouldn't be much backfire,
and it should HIT hard unless you run the bigger tire
in which case, good luck getting it to hit hard.
Personally, I rode a Savage with the bigger back
tire and it SUCKS!! My bike seriously smoked it.
Good luck , let me know how it turns out.
I wouldn't change pilot jet. You probably will
end up not being able to idle at all! Later, bRYAN
